I can't add a book, because I keep getting the message "Please delete x characters".
Simply delete the amount of extra characters requested and then again click "Add Book". In most cases, this is all you need to do.

If you've deleted the characters requested, and are still getting the message, this may help. If you've had to delete a number of extra characters, sometimes "ghost characters" exist at the end of the last line. Position your cursor to the right of the period on the last line and use the delete key to eliminate these extra characters. Or use your mouse, select to the right of the last period, and hit the delete key.

How do I fill out the Add Book form?
Here are detailed instructions for adding a book.
  • Title - enter the exact title of the book
  • Author - if you've entered a book by this author before, simply choose their name from the Author I've Read list.
  • New Author - For new authors, type their name in the New Author box in first name last name order (e.g. Samuel Writer).
  • Subject - Choose an appropriate Subject from the list. The most common fiction subjects are: Fiction, Mystery, Romance and Thriller.
  • Pages - (optional) Number of pages in the book
  • Read? - Leave as Yes unless you needed to show this book hasn't yet been read.
  • Date Read - Defaults to current month. Optionally you can change to more accurately reflect when read.
  • Grade - How would you rate this book? Grade it A-F, A being best of course.
  • Comments - Optional, but this is what really tells everyone what this book was about and how you liked it! Comments should be concise; maximum of approximately six lines of text.
  • Most importantly - click Add Book when you're done. Your book won't be added unless you do, and that's a lot of wasted work!

I don't know the author's name, but I must enter something to add the book. What should I put as author?
Type "Unknown" as the author if you don't know the author's name. This will allow you to add the book. You can always change the book later and fix the author.

I get this error when adding a book: "Timeout - your book was not saved. You must log back in now to save your book."

The system timed out while you were typing up your book. It hasn't been saved to your Book Corner yet.

All you have to do is immediately log back in to myBookCorner. Your book is then automatically added to your Corner.

You must act immediately however. Once you leave the logon error page you lose the information needed to "find" your lost book. (So if you have left that page use your Back browser button until you find that logon error page!)

I need to make changes to a book I've entered earlier. Where can I do this?
There are two main ways to find a book you want to change.
  1. Click on mybooks from the myBookCorner top menu. Find the book in your list. Click on the book's underlined name which will link to the change book page.
  2. You can also search for the book you want. Click search from the myBookCorner top menu. Search by title, author or subject. When you find your book, click on its name to link to the change book page.

What are Comments used for? What should I put there?
Comments let everyone know what this book was about and how you liked it! People are somewhat disappointed when they see a book you read but are left in the dark about what you really thought of it.

We're not talking about a lengthy book review! Comments should be concise; a maximum of approximately six lines of text. Just a few sentences - that's all we ask!

How long can I make my comments?
The maximum length for written comments is roughly six lines of text (255 characters).

If you go over, you'll get a message telling you exactly how many characters you need to delete to read 255. Delete this number of characters and then click Add Book once again.

Can I change someone else's book? It seems like I can make changes!
No, you can only make changes to your own books. You can look at other's books, but you can't change anything. Although it seems you can make changes, notice anything different? There's no Submit button to actually make the change! Only on your books is there a Change Book button to submit your updates.

I added a book but there are two of same book! What happened and how do I fix it?
Normally you should click the Add Book button and wait for myBookCorner to finish adding your book. When it's done you're sent to the mybooks page and see your new book in the list.

The problem comes if you click Add Book more than once. You will then likely get two of the same book.

It's easy to fix. At the mybooks page click on the extra book. Then on the change books page click the Delete Book button.

I'm adding several books, but the Add Book page stays filled in from the first book - how do I get the blank Add Book page again?

Click Refresh or Reload on your browser to get a new page.

If this is a persistent problem, you can modify your browser settings to always get a new copy of the page. For example in Internet Explorer 5.0:

  • Click on Tools then Internet Options
  • Click on Settings
  • Click on the option: Check for newer versions of stored pages - Every Visit to the Page

Do I need to fill out Pages for my book?
No, Pages is optional. However, this book would not count then for any of the Pages Read reports in the Scoreboard area.

What's the difference between subjects Fiction, Mystery and Thriller?
Mystery books are usually "whodunits". Often there's a crime and the book focuses on solving the mystery behind the crime. Many times Mystery books belong to a series with a common hero/heroine in each book.

Thrillers are often action-oriented suspense novels. There is a tightly-woven plot and many "thrills" in these stories. Examples include spy novels, government conspiracies, War stories, etc.

Fiction applies to always any novel, so it's mainly reserved for those stories not belonging to a typical genre (like Mystery, Romance or Thriller). Novels of serious subjects (often Book Club or Oprah-recommended books) would be classified as Fiction. But Fiction is so broad that's only one example.
